AEDs for Newbies

An AED is a small , easily transportable machine that analyzes a person’s heart rhythm for any flaws and, if necessary , directs the trained help to provide an electrical shock to the heart of an SCA sufferer.  This shock , entitled defibrillation, might enable the heart to reestablish a normal rhythm .

An AED employs   voice prompts to instruct   the rescuer . As soon as the device is turned on , the rescuer will be prompted to place the two pads provided with the Automated External Defibrillator to the victim’s chest. Once applied , the AED will commence monitoring the sufferer’s heart rhythm.  If a “shockable” rhythm is recognized, the unit will charge itself and advise the rescuer to stand clear of the SCA victim and to press the shock button.

An AED is hard wired to communicate to the rescuers specifically what needs to be done, employing  voice and visual cues . trained help put  adhesive electrode pads on the victim’s chest. Through these electrodes, the AED is built to automatically evaluate the electrical activity of the heart to decide if a “shockable” rhythm exists.

Whether you expeience an SCA at work   or in the Emergency Room of a hospital, defibrillation is THE best treatment.

Automated External Defibrillator laws change from state to state.  Look to see what your state requires .

Keep in mind that, not all Automated External Defibrillators are built the same.  That said we endorse the ZOLL AED Plus, because the AED Plus it the most user friendly AED out there.
