Manager Cholesterol With Resveratrol
Resveratrol is a polyphenol naturally found in the skin of red grapes, certain berries and other plants. Scientific studies have shown that Resveratrol supports healthy cardiovascular function through various mechanisms. Resveratrol is also a substance found in red wine appearing to have multiple health benefits including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, the ability to lower cholesterol, and reduce the risk of cancer.
If you missed the March 28, 2008 CBS News online article about Resveratrol, you will be pleased to know that according to the CBS write-up, Resveratrol may destroy cancer cells when teamed with radiation. It goes on to say that a recent study has found that the antioxidant know as resveratrol attacks cancer cells from the inside and actually enhances radiation, as well as chemotherapy treatments.
Researchers are saying that the Antioxidant Resveratrol may in effect target the cancer cell’s very energy source from the inside thereby crippling it. Most notably, when used in conjunction with radiation, treatment with the antioxidant resveratrol before radiation also induced cancer cell death, a very important objective of cancer treatment.
These benefits of resveratrol may explain the “French Paradox” which is the fact that the French diet, while high in fat and cholesterol, does not cause a significant increase in heart disease in the French population as it seems to in other countries. This paradox may be true because of all the red wine the French drink, which appears to be the protective factor. Mice fed a high fat diet plus resveratrol lived longer than control mice fed only the high fat diet. Animal studies do not always translate to humans, however, the studies plus the “French Paradox” is suggestive that there is something to this phenomena.
Fortunately, you no longer have to drink red wine to get the benefits of resveratrol. Resveratrol comes in a capsule, tablet, or powder form for easy consumption. Look for a name brand resveratrol such as Solaray, Source Naturals vitamins, Natures Plus, and Doctors Best to ensure quality and purity of the product you purchase at your local or internet health food store.
