PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT JOBS
The Physical Therapist Assistant requires an associate’s degree from an accredited school and may need licensing depending on the state. Accredited programs can be attained from the “Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education,” otherwise known as (CAPTE). The programs may be offered in community colleges
Under the direction of the Physical Therapist, the assistant will perform part of the patient’s treatment. The Physical Therapist’s Assistant will partake in such tasks as helping the patient to the appropriate exercises that best assist to the progressive mobility and the prevention of disabilities. Included will be the training of various types of equipment, and teaching the use of necessary apparatuses and prosthetics. While assisting in various evaluations, conducts testing, observes and reports the patient’s progress the assistant will clean and prepare the work areas for the activities. Such activities may include messages, electrical stimulation, baths, hot and cold packs, the use of traction of varied appropriate methods, ultrasound to soothe, and may be assisted by a Physical Therapist Assistant Aid.
The annual earnings for the Physical Therapist Assistant jobs, has been estimated to be $35,000 to $65,000. Some of the facilities the Assistant may frequent while working are home healthcare services, nursing care facilities, offices of physical and occupational therapists, audiologist facilities, general medical and surgical hospitals, and offices of physicians, and is often assisted by the Physical Assistant Aid, who’s earnings may vary from $18,000 – $35,000, annually. The aid has a future for advancement in becoming a Physical Therapist Assistant, with proven knowledge and experience. This may also require attending school. There are no license requirements for the aid in most areas, but being certified in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), first aid, and some types of experience may be mandatory, while some clerical duties are essential, such as, telephone, insurance, filing, and other paperwork.
Hours of work may vary, but mostly accommodate the patients in after hour’s schedules such as evenings and weekends. Thus, a lot of the Physical Therapist’s Assistant work takes place in after working hour schedules and often work may only be part-time. The Physical Therapy Assistant can advance to a specialty and work in a specific area in clinics and hospitals. Becoming a Physical Therapist may require additional courses. The education programs for the two professions differ in many ways. For the assistant such course work requirements would be biology, chemistry, and physics prior to the initial therapy education. This under-populated profession can be rewarding, stable, and gratifying career that requires energy, strength, and emotional stability. The job outlook for the Physical Therapists Assistant seems secure as the Physical Therapist’s profession is becoming more demanding, and as our populations and lifespan increases.
